City Lore teaching artist Yahaya Kamate worked with PS 147 students and prepared them for a culminating performance in the school auditorium. Children learned about different countries in Africa while working on storytelling through dance.
In addition, students who participated in this residency showed improved attendance on the days that they met with the teaching artist. Students who normally exhibit negative behavior patterns not only excelled in the performance, but under Yahaya’s expert guidance began to transform and exhibit leadership skills for the first time in their lives.
